Grey-top blood tubes contain potassium oxalate (anticoagulant) and sodium fluoride (preservative). These tubes are used to preserve glucose in whole blood to ensure that no further glucose breakdown occurs within the sample after it is taken from the patient's body. Grey-top tubes are used primarily for glucose tolerance tests and for some special chemistry tests such as blood-alcohol and lactic acid.
